nightstand

It’s time again for the What’s on Your Nightstand? Carnival on 5 Minutes for Books.

I adore reading so this is my favorite site.   I meant to do one in January but in the move, I missed it.   I really haven’t done much reading these last two months–not of the book variety anyway :).

41uezk7kbrl_sl160_ I did get two books read and am in the process of writing full-fledged reviews on them.  One was given to me by my  SIL for Christmas.    Mom To Mom, Day to Day:   Advice and Support for Catholic Living by Danielle Bean (editor of Faith and Family LIVE!)   Its a nice collection of essays about being the mother of a large Catholic family and how it’s possible to spend time with God even in the midst of chaos.

511j8fh6y2l_sl160_This is another book that I’ve been reading.   As little time as I have, you’d think that books that require me to DO something would get annoying.    Alas, I like books that give me tools I can use the best.   She breaks down a mother’s life into 5 sections:  Prayer, Person, Partner, Parent and Provider (catchy, eh?).    She tells you how to create what is essentially a Household Notebook or a Control Journal (a la Flylady) but keeping those primary goals in mind.    It’s essentially a Catholic Proverbs 31 study, even though it never actually mentions it.   One thing that I’ve found about Proverbs 31 studies is that they are usually written for people who do not see motherhood as a vocation — Catholics, I’ve found, who study the subject, seem to see the Proverbs 31 stuff as secondary to the VOCATION of Motherhood.    When I have a little money, I have a few more Proverbs 31, Catholic books that I’d like to read.   Anyway, I’m slowly working through the application of the book and after I get that going and the honeymoon is over, I’ll tell you more about it.

I also bought Simplify Your Life (on clearance) and frankly it’s just been a book that Lil’ Bit has played with.   I haven’t gotten past page 5.

For next month, I purchased two books from a Fr. Patrick A Martin.   He came to Marathon to do some mission talks on God’s Will (for your life).    VERY good speaker!   Anyway, I hope to get at least one of those read.   One was called Called…At Home on the Road and the other was a collection of 3 books called Speaking God’s Love to a Broken World.

I also hope to finish working my way through the newest edition of Your Money or Your Life.   I’ve already read this several times, but I need to work through the application of it again.   Especially in light of the current economic climate, it would help to improve my skills so that IF the worst case happens, it doesn’t affect us as much as it could.    It will also really help me to have a good firm grip on these things before I go back up to our house to sell it all and pack up what we’re keeping.

Those are my modest goals for March’s reading.    I will also be trying to keep up on the Lenten readings in my Green Books.   We’ll see how that works 🙂
